Yes Mercedes, I do believe in Editors
Monday, May 30th, 2005Senior year Sarah and I went to the bookstore. Once I thought I took a long time picking out books, but I have nothing on her. I found her on the floor reading some book to see if she wanted to buy it. I picked up another one of the books she was considering and started reading. It was Joust by Mercedes Lackey, and it was about dragons.
I’m an absolute sucker for dragons. I had to buy it.
The sequel had already been released in hardcover, so as soon as I finished Joust- which didn’t take long, I read Alta. The third novel in the trilogy didn’t come out until a couple of weeks ago. It took me a while to get a hold of it (long story) but as soon as I saw it… I knew I was going to be disappointed. It was horribly, horribly thin.
The problem I encountered with the first two novels was they were obviously badly edited. Lackey repeated herself often and there were numerous mistakes in terms of the names of characters and dragons. I didn’t really care- they were fast reads- but the third novel… not only was it badly edited, but it was horribly dull compared to the first two.
It was just so… ‘Gee, I’ve wasted all my fun ideas on the first two novels so now I’m stuck with a very simple resolution that I can’t seem to make interesting.’ With the first two novels there was real danger for the characters, with the third it was just so… just so… anti-climactic.
I’m disappointed. And I don’t think I’m going to buy any more books by Lackey. Well, except for the third novel in that trilogy she’s writing with James Mallory. After that, I’m done. Finished.
I swear.
